Benedictine
women and men have a long history of arriving in a region,
usually at the invitation of a residing Bishop, and establishing
an on-going presence for the people of the area through
education, healthcare and sharing the Gospel of Jesus. All
Benedictine communities trace their beginnings to
St. Benedict
of Nursia, Italy who lived during the 5th century. He and his
sister, Scholastica, established a way of life for men and women
who desired to live more closely with the Gospel. The "Rule
of Saint Benedict," as we now call this way of living, is
the foundation for monastic life.
Our journey to the Dakota
prairies covers hundreds of years, and required women of
courageous commitment, deep faith in God and a great love for
people. Handed this torch of tradition, we move forward in faith
to continue this mission.
