University of Mary Confers Degree to Sister Mary Elizabeth Mason, OSB

At its April 28, 2012 Commencement, the University of Mary conferred the degree of Doctor of the University, honoris causa, posthumously on Sister Mary Elizabeth Mason, OSB, an exceptional leader who distinguished herself in the responsible search for and service of truth.

A woman of keen intellect, many talents and deep faith, Sister Mary Elizabeth Mson dedicated her life to serving God's people. Her journey as a sister began Feb. 27, 1937, when she took vows with an order in the Carolinas where she was raised and found new paths in the Benedictine tradition when she joined the Sisters of the Annunciation in 1948, spanning 75 years until her death on Feb. 27, 2012. A teacher and librarian at St. Mary's Central High School, the first principal of Priory High School, and faculty and chair in Mary's Humanities Division, she guided and inspired generations of students. Her penchant for service later found wider expression as pastoral associate for the Church of Saint Anne in Bismarck and teaching in the Marshall Islands at the age of 80. A gifted writer whose endeavors ranged from scholarly translations and commentaries to work for the Federation of St. Benedict, she also penned the lyrics to the University of Mary's alma mater and the history of the school's first 50 years. She viewed the world and its people with open eyes, a warm heart, and selfless caring; her concerns were global and her kindness and generosity boundless.
