May your journey through Holy Week bring you closer to God, renewed faith, peace and love!
Every year, we enjoy the creative, artistic gifts of Sister Edith Selzler as she designs and creates the Annunciation Monastery Easter candle. Each candle is as beautiful as the next! Here is Sister Edith's description of the 2013 Easter candle:
The Easter candle for 2013 is ornamented with spring lively colors of the dawn, the "early in the morning" when the women went to the tomb.
Two bands hold beads of shell, perhaps the earliest Christian symbol of baptism
(we renew our baptismal vows as we gather around the candle at Vigil)
and of eternal life. The shape of a scallop shell was carved on the gravestones of
Christians buried in the catacombs, so this was centuries before bunnies, eggs and lilies!
*This year, you may want to consider going to a craft store to buy a bag of scallop shells (the fan-shaped ones) and give them to family and friends for Easter!
