An Evening of Appreciation for Richard Tschider

It was an evening filled with prayer, song, laughter, story-telling and most of all heartfelt gratitude.  On Nov. 12, the Benedictine Sisters paid tribute to Richard "Dick" Tschider, his wife, Sharon, and their family for blessing us with their presence for over 45 years.  Dick is retiring CEO of St. Alexius Medical Center, one of Annunciation Monastery's sponsored ministries.  We deeply appreciate his dedication to Christ's healing ministry and pray for a future bright with promise for him and his family.

St. Benedict Sculpture Arrives at

University of Mary

Convocation & Dedication - Sept. 8, 2005

on the Feast of the Birth of Mary

The Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery, sponsors of the University of Mary, America's Leadership University, celebrated with University staff and friends, the arrival of sculptor Greg Mueller's sculpture of St. Benedict.

The 15-foot bronze sculpture was inspired by chapter on humility in the Rule of Benedict.  Benedict is depicted stepping onto a 12-rung ladder (the 12 steps of humility).  In the words of Benedict, "After ascending all these steps of humility, we will quickly arrive at that perfect love of God which casts out fear."

The worn robes and bare feet exemplify the simplicity of his life teachings and the shaven head represents the appearance of the Roman slaves and of Benedict's "slavery to the truth." His right hand embraces a rung on the ladder, while the left hand is open, inviting all to follow the Rule."

The bronze statue was commissioned by the University of Mary through the generosity of Myron and Marge Atkinson and created by Greg Mueller, Sculptor, of Mueller Sculpture, Bowling Green, Ohio.

The Priory High School Class of 1965 recently celebrated its 40th reunion.  The former classmates toured their old stomping grounds at University of Mary and lunched at Annunciation Monastery.

Priory High was an all girls' school for boarding and day students and was operated by the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery from the fall of 1959 to the spring of 1968.  It was during those nine years that lifelong friendships were formed and Christian community was created.  The ladies chatted non-stop about all the fun they had in school and their great teachers (mostly Benedictine sisters!)

Sr. Susan Lardy, St. Alexius Mission Effectiveness Coordinator, addresses guests at the dedication of the St. Alexius Medical Center's new Solarium and Meditation Room.

The following is an excerpt from Sr. Renee Zastoupil's presentation at the dedication service for the new Solarium and Meditation Room at St. Alexius Medical Center. Sr. Renee serves as Director of Pastoral Care at the medical center.

"Today indeed is a day of celebration of a dream come true.  St. Alexius has had a diversity committee and education subcommittee involving members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe had expressed a desire to have a space in the hospital where they could address the spiritual needs of tribal members hospitalized at St. Alexius Medical Center.

"The Solarium and Meditation Room enflesh our core value of "healing presence" that St. Alexius represents.  The Solarium is uniquely designed to create a quiet space that promotes well-being for patients, staff, and visitors, where they can retreat and renew themselves.  It is a place where employees can pause for a few minutes to refresh their spirits and regain a sense of equilibrium in the midst of a busy schedule.

"This space is vital for us if the human spirit is to thrive and be creative. It was created with an environment and atmosphere of natural light, soothing music, trees, flowers, and carefully selected artwork. The fireplace is unique; the flame warms the body and symbolizes the spirit, reducing stress and nourishing the soul.  The meditation room is a space specially designed to accommodate the cultural/religious practices of people of other faiths for whom the main chapel is not suitable.  We wanted other cultures and faiths to feel at home and meet their spiritual needs."

Sisters Frances and Rose Schweitzer spend a summer day enjoying the merry-go-round at the amusement park in Bismarck's Sertoma Park.  Some of the other sisters who accompanied them rode the super slide, the Ferris wheel and one even took a turn in the batting cage.  Just another day in the life of a sister...

Annunciation Monastery Hosted

"Celebrating the Common Life" Event

June 24-27, 2005

A gathering of monastic women of the

Federation of St. Benedict professed since 1967

The Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery hosted a June enrichment weekend for monastic women of the Federation of St. Benedict who have been professed since 1967.  Forty sisters from Benedictine communities focused on the theme "Celebrating the Common Life" to listen, reflect and share ideas to renew and enliven life within their communities.

Keynote speaker, Sister Margaret Mary 'Meg' Funk, of Our Lady of Grace Monastery, Beech Grove, IN, blessed the women with her powerful perspectives on living the common life through prayer, community and the Rule of Benedict.

The weekend, while spiritually intense and thought provoking, offered time for picnics, hiking, energetic conversation, ice cream, exploring block houses at Fort Lincoln and entertainment (Native American story telling and flute playing by Matt Schanandore).  Rumor has it, some of the participants took turns on the Ferris wheel and giant slide at the amusement park at Bismarck's Sertoma Park!
